At Glastonbury Animal Hospital, serving Glastonbury and Marlborough, we align with the American Veterinary Medical Association's recommendation that spaying and neutering are the best ways to prevent unwanted litters, unnecessary euthanasia, and shelter overcrowding. Additionally, having your pet "fixed" can increase its life expectancy and minimize health and behavioral problems. Read on for more information about spaying or neutering your pet.

What is the Difference Between Spaying and Neutering?

Spaying involves removing the uterus and ovaries of female pets, while neutering involves removing the testes of male pets. These procedures render the animals unable to reproduce.

What Can I Expect on the Day of the Spay or Neuter Procedure?

On the day of your pet's surgery, you'll be asked to arrive early in the morning so your pet can be given a pre-surgical exam and properly prepped for the procedure. This preparation includes shaving and cleaning the surgical area. Once your pet is ready, it will be transferred to the surgical suite and, once under anesthesia, will be monitored closely throughout the procedure, which typically takes no more than 30 to 40 minutes. After suturing, your pet will be moved to a recovery area and monitored until it recovers from the anesthesia. Most pets are ready to go home after 4 to 5 hours at the most.

What Are the Benefits of Spaying and Neutering?

In addition to controlling the pet population, spaying and neutering provide your pet with numerous health benefits and a more peaceful life. Generally, pets that are fixed live longer than those that are not. The procedures eliminate or greatly reduce the chances of several health issues, such as certain cancers and urinary infections.

Fixed animals are also less prone to wandering or running away. Without the urge to mate, they exhibit fewer aggressive behaviors and are more affectionate with their human families. Additionally, there's less mess for you to manage, as the incidence of spraying and inappropriate urination decreases. Females will not experience heat cycles, which can be messy for you and miserable for your pet.
